EastEnders boss Kate Oates has dropped some big teasers on the highly-anticipated shock death this week, likening it to a 'Greek tragedy'.

The BBC soap is celebrating its 35th anniversary and kicked off a major week of episodes last night (February 17) with an incident at the Carters' boat party.

Mick and Linda were left fighting for their lives when the celebrations ended in disaster and several more of the show's much-loved characters are due to take centre stage throughout the week.

Show bosses have already confirmed that the drama on board will ultimately lead to a shock death, with the unlucky victim's identity being revealed on Friday (February 21).

Speaking to Digital Spy and other media at an EastEnders press event yesterday (February 17), both Kate and executive producer Jon Sen insisted there was "only ever one candidate" they intended to kill off in the milestone episodes.

Kate commented: "There is something almost like a tragedy about this particular person who dies and it could be argued that it's been set up for some time. It is like a Greek tragedy."

Jon added: "In retrospect you'll see that there is only ever one candidate really who can generate the story we wanted to tell going forward for months and months."

Tonight's EastEnders episode will shift focus to the Fowlers and the Beales, as Ian seeks revenge over Bobby and Sonia gets worrying news from the police.

EastEnders airs tonight at 7.30pm on BBC One.
