EastEnders' Christmas special left off with lots of mysteries, right? Viewers definitely are going to get their questions answered… in one week's time.
The BBC One soap has confirmed that its New Year's Eve episode will actually include flashbacks to Christmas Day, giving viewers resolution for those festive cliffhangers.
The most shocking mystery viewers were left pondering was Keanu Taylor's (Danny Walters) fate, after a rampaging Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) finally outed his future son-in-law's affair with Sharon (Letitia Dean).
Although it appeared as if Martin Fowler (James Bye) had shot Keanu at the Mitchells' behest, Keanu's fate was left entirely ambiguous.
New Year's Day will reveal exactly what happened to the eldest Taylor son. How will Martin be able to reconcile what he has done — especially after his hit-and-run?
With the soap already confirming that Danny Walters will be leaving EastEnders over the festive period, we wouldn't bank on a miraculous happy ending.
What to Read Next
The Mitchells weren't the only family leaving viewers guessing on Christmas Day. The Carters continued to struggle over Linda's (Kellie Bright) drinking, especially after she ended up in the hospital.
While EastEnders' New Year's Eve episode will be told entirely from Linda's perspective, the next day will follow her into a very dangerous situation as her drinking spirals out of control.
Further mysteries playing out in this flashback episode include one family being aided by a surprising guardian angel, while another is determined to find the truth after receiving new evidence.
“We all agreed that Christmas is so good we wanted to do it twice," executive producer Jon Sen announced. "So this year, the New Year's Day episode will be a format-busting 60-minute episode taking us back to the beginning of Christmas Day to see the stories from different perspectives.
"As the episode unfolds, viewers will discover what really happened on that day, when new secrets were born and fresh alliances forged. I can’t wait to see how fans react.”
EastEnders airs its hour-long flashback special on New Year's Day at 8pm on BBC One.
