EastEnders fans' hopes of a happy Christmas were dashed tonight (December 20) as fan-favourite couple Callum (Tony Clay) and Ben (Max Bowden) broke up.

Ben had promised Callum he would leave his criminal past behind him, but he's recently been drawn into his dad Phil's plot to get even with the father of Sharon's (Letitia Dean) unborn child.

Tonight, Callum finally confronted Ben about his behaviour, accusing him of being responsible for attacking Jack.

But Ben tried to brush off Callum's questions, telling him it was best to stay out of his family business before leaving.

While Callum was upset, he later had a talk with Stuart who told him 'love forgives everything', which seemed to make him think about giving Ben another chance.

In the Vic, the couple had a drink together where Ben admitted he had been dragged into some 'family stuff' but it was over.

Ben then told Callum it was his dad who had hurt Jack while he had been trying to save him. Ben then asked his boyfriend, "Are we good?" to which Callum replied, "We're getting there."

But Callum wasn't totally convinced by Ben, so he decided to pay Jack a visit to ask him what really happened to him. While Jack wouldn't admit who hurt him, he did warn Callum to remember, "Like father, like son."

Callum then returned home and pleaded to Ben to be honest, but Ben told him he was protecting him by not admitting the truth.

But Callum persisted, telling Ben he could handle whatever it is that's going on as he just doesn't want to be shut out.

Callum told Ben he was in love with him, declaring their relationship "beautiful" and reminding his boyfriend he could tell him anything.

But Ben responded angrily, asking Callum, "Why did you have to go and do that?"

As their argument spilled out into the Square, Callum told Ben, "You love me too," to which Ben responded, "Do you think it's going to change me if I do?"

Ben then heartbreakingly told his boyfriend: "I don't love you. I don't want your love."

Fans were extremely upset by the couple's sudden demise and declared Christmas ruined.

Let's hope the couple can patch things up in time to spend their first Christmas together.
