What better way to start off the New Year than with a wedding? Well, unless you're about to be married in EastEnders.

Our first visit to Albert Square of 2019 featured an apparent murder, then seemingly a resurrection, before ending in an arrest.

Mel Owen (Tamzin Outhwaite) was set to marry Ray Kelly (Sean Mahon) as part of her plan to get revenge on him after finding out he was already married to two other women.

But before she could walk down the aisle, Ray revealed that he knew she was in contact with his wife Nicola, seemingly foiling Mel's plan to fleece him out of all his money.

Things then took a dark turn when after a tense argument, Ray strangled Mel, seemingly killing her and hiding her body in a cupboard.

Ray went on to the church and acted like nothing was wrong, with the guests thinking that perhaps he'd been left at the altar.

But both Ray and viewers got a shock when a very much alive Mel walked down the aisle, wearing a scarf to cover her bruises, and asking Ray: "What's wrong? You look like you've seen a ghost."

The two then went for a private chat with Mel telling her fiancé she wanted him to go through with the wedding so she could get the rest of his money and if he refused, she'd tell everyone he tried to kill her.

And with that the happy couple said "I do", but the surprises weren't over for Ray.

Unbeknown to him, his wives Maddie and Nicola had told the police that he was already married to two women and he was arrested outside the church.

Does this mean Ray will finally get his comeuppance, or will he once again find a way to get out of trouble?
