Coronation Street could be about to line up a troubling twist for vicar Billy Mayhew that will see him develop an addiction to heroin, if new storyline rumours are to be believed.

Earlier this year, the soap began a storyline that saw Billy (Daniel Brocklebank) become addicted to painkillers as he struggled to cope with his severe pain following Christmas Day cliff fall and after he was prompted by Adam Barlow (Samuel Robertson).

It's all part of Adam's revenge plot against Billy, as Adam's harbouring a grudge for Billy after finding out that Billy was involved in the death of his mum Susan in 2001.

With Adam vowing to avenge his mum's death, he's manipulated Billy into getting hooked on painkillers after swapping the stronger prescription for paracetamol, but according to new storyline rumours Billy's addictions could see him turn to even stronger substances.

According to The Sun, Billy is now set to spiral down an ever darker path when he turns to heroin after he can't find any legal pills to take.

Of course, this is one potential storyline that's still very much a rumour for now and, when asked by Digital Spy, a spokesperson for Coronation Street said: "We don't comment on storyline speculation."

Speaking about his painkiller addiction storyline last month, Daniel Brocklebank revealed that viewers will see Billy become increasingly dependent upon the painkillers.

"We will see him getting increasingly addicted to the painkillers, which is of course Adam's plan," he said.

"To research the storyline, I have spoken to people who have been addicted to painkillers and some who still are. I was shocked by the figures for people out there going through this.

"The percentage of people who end up in this way is quite terrifying, so it is important to make sure we do this storyline well and warn people of the dangers of getting hooked on these drugs post-trauma."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
