Coronation Street star Harriet Bibby admits mixed reactions to Summer's decisions

Coronation Street star Harriet Bibby has admitted there were mixed reactions to the exploits of her character, Summer Spellman.

At the end of last year, Summer found out she had a miscarriage, but proceeded to deceive Matt and Esther by taking the money they had offered for the baby.

Since then, Summer has attempted to make amends for the fraud by becoming a surrogate for the pair, and Harriet has revealed the latest development in the saga has garnered a polarised response from viewers.

“It’s been a bit of a mixed reception,” she told Inside Soap. “Some people can see why Summer chose to pursue the surrogacy and that her intentions are good – and feel quite sorry for her. However, others are like ‘what is she doing?’ It’s a difficult one!”

The actress, who began playing Summer on the ITV soap in 2020, offered her thoughts on the turn of events, revealing she was surprised by the character’s actions: “I definitely didn’t see it coming at all.

“Summer genuinely wants to help the people around her. She thinks she’s helping Esther and Mike by promising them a baby, and she thinks she’s helping Aaron by helping his dad – but by doing that Summer has put herself in a tricky situation,” she continued.

Earlier this year, the actress revealed that she has a second job away from the cobbled streets of Weatherfield, saying: “On my weekends, I’m a singing teacher. On Saturday mornings I teach kids at a musical theatre club.

“I was a student and I’ve just carried on as I love it,” she continued. “It’s really fun and the kids are great. The kids I teach watched me get slimed on CBBC – and they loved that!”
