Coronation Street star Millie Gibson has explained her character Kelly Neelan's dangerous new storyline.

In episodes set to air next week, the Weatherfield teen will take steps to atone for her late father Rick's wrongdoings from when he was a loan shark.

However, things quickly turn sour when Ross, one of the ex clients she returns money to, secretly calls a friend to inform him of Kelly's visit. He's clearly plotting something, and it looks like Kelly has just gotten herself into some serious trouble.

"I think she wants to redeem her dad's work in any way she can," she shared. "When she was passed down the money from him, she repeatedly called it dirty blood money. So I think it's her way of paying back all the wrongs her dad committed.

"I know it won't save the people that are too late, but it could save the ones that still have a chance because she always believes in second chances. She's trying to redeem it in any way she can."

Gary is completely against Kelly going to meet her father's old associates, but she doesn't listen to his advice. Gibson explains that's because she's been trying to do the right thing "ever since Seb's death", and to her, she "genuinely believes now this is the right thing".

She continued: "And she's so stubborn. I think that's another characteristic she developed from her mum and dad. She thinks she's right with this. She's really determined to do what she thinks is best. Gary tells her 'no' but she's like 'no, no, trust me. I know, I know what I'm doing'."

The young actress went on to say that Kelly doesn't believe what she's doing is dangerous because she's so "gullible", and that while she initially thinks Ross is "intimidating", she believes she can find a way to worm her way in.

"And you know, he'll just turn into a cuddly toy as soon as she shows him the wad of cash she's got for him," she adds. "But as soon as he recognises who she is, it's in an accusatory way.

"I think she's like, oh, gosh, I should probably make my way out now she hastily leaves his property but I think she sort of thinks, gosh, right, we won't knock on that door again, but thinks nothing of it. Because she's got so many more people to knock on. But yeah, she's just so gullible sometimes...."
