Coronation Street star Alexandra Mardell has shared a goodbye message to the fans following her character Emma Brooker's exit scenes airing.

The character bowed out after a week that saw her end things with boyfriend Jon, admit her involvement in his grandfather's death, and then agree to move to Australia with him immediately.

In a video shared on the official Coronation Street Twitter account, Mardell said: "I just wanted to say another goodbye and thank you to everyone at Coronation Street. I miss you so much already. Thank you to all the fans for being so supportive over the last four years and looking after Emma.

"I really have had the best time of my life and I'm so, so grateful. So thank you for having me, goodbye for now and lots of love."

In Emma's exit scenes, she deliberated about going to Australia that day or waiting a few months, before deciding on taking the leap now and receiving an emotional sendoff from the residents of the cobbles.

It's a very open-ended exit for the character, and Mardell did tell Digital Spy recently that she doesn't consider her time on the soap to be completely over.

"I've definitely not drawn a line under it," she said. "I can see how people stay there for so long. I don't know what the future holds but I'm just so glad that Emma is still alive, and hopefully, she remains alive."

Mardell joined the soap back in 2018 and won the British Soap Award for Best Newcomer, and achieved a nomination at the National Television Awards too.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV and streams on the ITV Hub.
