Coronation Street's Kel Allen addresses soap exit

Coronation Street star Kel Allen has described her character Laura Neelan's upcoming exit as "bittersweet".

In scenes broadcasting next week, Kelly's wayward mum returns to the Weatherfield cobbles baring devastating news: she's been diagnosed with stomach cancer and has just months to live.

Due to her mum's history, Kelly is initially reluctant to believe Laura, but soon changes her mind when she acknowledges how ill she looks.

Reflecting on her Corrie role coming to a tragic end, Allen went on to say: "I think for me, it's bittersweet – I guess Laura could have stayed around. But then what would have happened? She'd be up to her old tricks again.

"Every actor wants to get their teeth into something so gritty, and there's always twists and turns. For me, I'm excited for what's to come. I'll be so sad when I leave, because obviously, I've made so many bonds with everybody off set.

"It does sound extremely cliché when people say it's a family, but it genuinely is. I'll miss that, but we'll all still stay in touch. And I've still got quite a lot of time in the show yet."

Meanwhile, the soap star also offered an insight to Laura's thought process for returning.

"As a mum, it's taken something so tragic to happen to herself to make her realise what's important, and that her world is Kelly. She wants to make amends for all the wrongdoings.

"She doesn't know how much time she's got, and how long she's going to be around. But in all this time she's there, she wants to sort things out with her daughter, and she needs to get everything back on track."
