Coronation Street has marked its 60th anniversary with some impressive 'then and now' studio pictures.

The ITV soap reaches the landmark milestone this week and has a number of celebrations lined up, including the commissioning of a portrait for Bill Roach and a week of special 60th anniversary episodes.

To kick off the week in style, on Monday (December 7), the soap released aerial photographs of its 'world-beating' production centre, alongside a photo of the studio it all started in sixty years ago this Wednesday (December 9).

Sixty years and 10190 episodes into filming the soap, the 2020 set in Trafford is the fifth interpretation of Coronation Street.

It boasts 7.7 acres and is said to be the biggest single television production site in the world.

The soap has filmed there since 2014, with further developments completed in 2018 with the Victoria Street extension and another two studios added.

It's quite the comparison to the soap's original home at Granada Television, where an original cast of just 12 actors filmed in Studio 2, as seen below:

At the show's inception in 1960, one wooden set represented the entire street and the so-called cobbles were actually painted onto the studio floor. The actors even had to pretend to step up on to an imaginary kerb.

Weatherfield, you've never looked so good.

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights on ITV at 7.30pm and 8.30pm, with Fridays sometimes featuring an hour-long episode from 7.30pm instead.
