Coronation Street favourites Bill Roache (Ken Barlow) and Barbara Knox (Rita Tanner) have returned to work for the first time since lockdown.

The pair's return to filming was announced by the official Corrie Twitter account who shared: "Here's some good news to put a smile on your faces!

"Coronation Street legends William Roache and Barbara Knox are back filming on the cobbles this week! Who's excited to see their return ahead of our 60th Anniversary celebrations?"

Coronation Street resumed filming in June, but older cast members including Roache, Knox, Malcolm Hebden (Norris Cole), Sue Nicholls (Audrey Roberts), did not return to set.

However in August Digital Spy confirmed that the older cast members would be back on our screens later this autumn.

Ken and Rita's return comes ahead of the soap's 60th anniversary special, which is set to air later this year.

Earlier this week Sally Dynevor (Sally Metcalfe) confirmed that filming had begun on the special episode, teasing a big "community story".

"We're all coming together, and it really is a lovely community story," Sally teased. "We're starting filming that in the next... well, we started this week, so that'll be out on December 9th, which is really exciting.

"At least we'll be able to film something to put out for you for the 60th anniversary. 60 years of Coronation Street, that's amazing!" the actress added.

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
