Coronation Street's Leanne Battersby and Steve McDonald are about to receive some more devastating news about Oliver.

The pair are still struggling to come to terms with their son's mitochondrial disease diagnosis and the fact there seems to be no chance of recovery. But that won't stop Leanne's stubborn pursuit of a cure.

In scenes set to air next week, the doctor will break the news to Leanne and Steve that they've had to up Oliver's sedation again, since his seizures have worsened and life support is now the only thing keeping him alive.

There is a brief moment of hope when Steve and Leanne are told by the consultant that a specialist from another hospital is coming over to assess Oliver and give a second opinion. Leanne is then thrilled to hear from Nick about a hospital in Germany where they can treat people with Oliver's condition.

However, their hope is short lived when the consultant specialist confirms that Oliver will never be able to breathe unaided, and that they should now consider turning off his life support.

Still refusing to accept her son's fate, a furious Leanne accuses the consultant of giving up on Oliver and announces her intention to send him to the hospital in Germany.

When speaking to the doctor in Germany via video link, Steve is concerned to see Leanne play down the severity of Oliver's condition. Leanne doesn't listen, however, and is delighted when the doctor says he will treat their son – for £500,000.

As Emma promises to come up with some fundraising ideas, Tracy implores Steve to talk to Leanne about playing down Oliver's symptoms. But will he go through with it?

Coronation Street is currently airing on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm on ITV.
