Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street has confirmed that Ken Barlow (Bill Roache)'s loyal dog Eccles will sadly die next week.

Emotional scenes will see Eccles put to sleep after the vets realise that she's seriously ill.

The tear-jerking storyline begins when Emma Brooker (Alexandra Mardell) takes Eccles and Rover for a walk together.

Eccles clearly isn't herself during the trip out, so Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin) suggests that she needs to see a vet.

What to Read Next

When Emma takes Eccles along for a check-up, the vet reveals the devastating news that Ken's pet has an inoperable tumour.

Emma is upset to learn that the kindest thing to do is put Eccles to sleep.

Later on, Ken, Tracy, Steve and Amy arrive at the vets and are distraught to learn that Eccles has passed away.

Ken is currently living at a retirement complex called Still Waters, where he's at odds with fellow resident Charles.

The animosity gets worse when Norris Cole (Malcolm Hebden) tells Ken that Charles made some disparaging remarks about Eccles after her death.

This is the final straw for Ken, who vows to stand against Charles when he's put up for re-election as residents chair. Has Charles met his match?

Eccles was introduced to Coronation Street in 2006, when Blanche Hunt took on responsibility for her following the death of the dog's original owner Lena.

Coronation Street airs these scenes on Wednesday, April 8 and Friday, April 10 at 7.30pm on ITV.
