Coronation Street star Chris Gascoyne has predicted that Peter Barlow and Carla Connor will reunite.

Show bosses are teasing another "will they / won't they?" scenario for the former couple, who'll grow closer again in the ITV soap's New Year's Eve episode.

As revealed in our big collection of Corrie Christmas and New Year spoilers, Carla (Alison King) grows concerned for Peter as he continues to make plans to buy the snooker hall on Victoria Street.

Fearing the purchase is a waste of money, Carla challenges Peter to a game of snooker and gets him to agree to call off his plans if she wins.

The old chemistry between Peter and Carla returns as they play, but will this be the start of a reunion? Only time will tell.

Discussing the possibility, Chris told us recently: "Well, it’s the chase. There’s some really good scenes on New Year’s Eve. They have a game of snooker and she wins. Peter didn’t know Carla could play snooker.

"She says: 'If you lose, then you have to give up on the snooker hall, you’re just jumping from one thing to another'. She beats him and he realises that she’s right about the snooker hall. They’re there on their own on New Year's Eve and they get very close. It’s a case of will they, or won't they?"

Asked whether he'd like them to get back together, Chris replied: "Yeah, I think that they will. It’s more interesting, as once they are back together, we’re back into the domestic kind of arguments – who buys the tea bags and who does the cooking?

"I think at the moment it’s pitched very well. Also there’s other stories around – it's not just those two. But even in the next set of stories, they’re still very close and there's unfinished business.

"Is Carla his one? I think it looks like that. They’ve had an on-off relationship for some 12 years now. I think that’s what the audience wanted.

"I still think Peter likes Leanne and it's possible there's still mileage with those two as well. I don’t think the Toyah relationship will happen again after what happened with the baby, but with Leanne it’s different.

"I still think Peter cares for Toyah, but I don’t think it will happen between them again. But then saying that, you never know! They write it and I just go along with it.

"I think it’s been a really good year and I’ve enjoyed what I’ve done. The next story block is great as well."

Coronation Street airs these scenes on New Year's Eve at 7.30pm on ITV.
