Casualty spoilers follow.
Casualty viewers may be left thinking that there was nothing particularly odd about that ending just now, but it actually had a very significant meaning.
Saturday night's visit to the ED saw Ollie's story insidiously play out in the background, but here's why you should be keeping a very close eye on it...
What did that cliffhanger really mean?
Tonight's episode predominantly focused around Paige and Rash, whose personal relationship threatened to impede their professional one (it wouldn't be a Casualty romance if it didn't), while Faith's home life ostensibly made its way onto the ward too.
On the sidelines, however, was an increasingly frantic Ollie – whose story is about to spin a darker, messier, and much more complicated yarn.
Throughout the episode, Ollie was seen desperately trying to speak to his dad David about something, even sparking concern from his old friend Natalia, who made it clear that she barely sees him anymore.
What to Read Next
"I needed to tell you something", Ollie said to David, in the closing moments of the episode. "It was really important."
Time will soon tell why and what this was, but the scene that followed – which saw Ollie meet with his friend Rob – might give you a bit of a clue.
"I'm the only one that's got your back", Rob said. "Me and you, that's all that matters. It's just us two now."
Ollie's story – what's happened so far?
Ollie's behaviour has become a cause of concern for David in recent weeks, but as you're about to find out, perhaps not enough of one.
We've seen Ollie be bullied and taunted by his peers, with Rob seemingly being the only support network he has at school. Ollie was also devastated when a video featuring a personal indiscretion was circulated online.
But actually, if we cast our minds back to 2021, Ollie's feelings of social isolation have been apparent for quite some time.
Last year, a dark, new story saw Rosa accused of harming her step-son Ollie, who was experiencing some mysterious physical symptoms.
Although later tests actually explained that Ollie was suffering with a Chiari malformation – meaning the lower part of his brain is pushing down into his spinal canal – Dylan was never completely convinced that was the root cause of some of the psychological symptoms the teenager had been experiencing as well.
At the time, Ollie had come into the ED with a cut on his arm, and Dylan never bought into the story he gave to explain it. As a consequence, Dylan wanted to do a mental-health assessment on Ollie, but this deeply distressed David and was seemingly never followed through.
What happens next?
Casualty is taking another short break, but will be back on Saturday, June 11 with an unmissable double episode which will change everything.
Fans will have to remain eagle-eyed for more information on this over the coming weeks but it's fair to say that Ollie's story – and the fallout of tonight's episode – will be front and centre.
Speaking about upcoming storylines recently, George Rainsford – who plays Ethan Hardy – said exclusively to Digital Spy: "I don't know a lot but there's some really heavy, dramatic stuff coming up for David, and Ethan is part of a large ensemble of support for him. That is the big story that is coming in."
Kirsty Mitchell, who plays Faith – seemingly confirmed this as well, saying to What To Watch: "I don't want to give too much away but there are shocking storylines coming up, where everybody’s lives cross, both professionally and personally.
"There’s massive stress at work for everyone, and some of the characters have to take that home. Faith doesn’t always hold it together, as you will see…"
Casualty continues with on Saturday, June 11 on BBC One.
