Arin Smethurst will be joining Casualty as the series' first recurring transgender character.
They have been cast as a new recruit to the paramedic team, Sah, joining current members Jan (Di Botcher), Teddy (Milo Clarke) and Iain (Michael Stevenson).
"I am honoured to be joining the spectacular Casualty family as a shiny new paramedic," Smethurst has said. "I'm so excited to portray this transgender, non-binary, salty but fiercely compassionate character and hope they are not only well-received, but also a source of awareness for those who have never met someone like me. I can't wait for you to meet Sah!"

Sah makes an interesting first impression because they're keen for their co-workers not to think they're over-eager.

Though they try to keep cool while bonding with the others on the paramedic team, Jan soon realises that Sah is just waiting for an opportunity to show their warm heart.
"We are delighted to welcome Arin to the Casualty family and launch our new paramedic Sah for the Saturday night audience," Holby City and Casualty executive producer Deborah Sathe said.
"Sah will get themselves into all sorts of professional adventures whilst masking their own personal sorrow. In a world where our privacy is something to be treasured, will Sah be able to keep theirs?"

Smethurst will be making their first-ever TV appearance when Sah arrives on-screen in Casualty later in October.
The continuing drama has been making a series of progressive steps in the last several months, having also recently announced a scheme for frontline medical workers.
Soap bosses are calling for someone with direct medical experience to join Casualty's production team as part of a continuing effort to portray the field responsibly in its episodes.
