Poor Lewis Hamilton was refused entry into the Royal Boxduring the Wimbledon final yesterday after seemingly flouting the All England Club's smart dress code.

The Formula One champion had shared an image of himself at Wimbledon wearing a hat, floral shirt and chinos on his Instagram page, and revealed his pride and honour at receiving the much-coveted invite.

But Wimbledon's official website states: "Protocol - dress is smart, suits/jacket and tie, etc. Ladies are asked not to wear hats, as they tend to obscure the vision of those seated behind them."

While he could have sought out the requisite attire of suit, jacket and tie, the F1 star's spokesperson later said: "Due to an unfortunate misunderstanding regarding the dress code at Wimbledon, Lewis is very disappointed to have missed the men's final."

Here's some of Lewis's recent eye-catching fashion statements, but would they have passed the All England Club's strict Royal Box test?

Circular sunglasses and a fedora hat are fast becoming Hamilton's trademark style. While the sunglasses are apparently perfectly acceptable for the Royal Box (although perhaps a touch uncouth due to their reflective lenses), the hat - as stated - is not deemed considerate for fellow attendees.

The exotic floral print bomber, long white tee, ripped jeans and white and gold trainers - perhaps inspired by close friend Pharrell Williams - are all a big no-no, but he may have got away with the gold chunky chain if he'd been wearing a shirt and tie.

While he may have melted in such a heavy three-piece suit, Lewis Hamilton would have definitely been allowed entry into the Royal Box in this attire.

The sports star wore this grey shiny suit - complete with tie - at the 2011 National Movie Awards, pictured above with US actress Mandy Moore.

Again, Lewis Hamilton may have been sweltering in this heavy suit jacket - which seems to recreate the appearance of a rubber tire - but he would have gained entry 100% to the Royal Box.

The 30-year-old reigning champ donned the jacket, tie, and grey striped suit trousers teamed with black rimmed glasses for the prestigious IWC 'Journey To The Stars' Gala Dinner earlier this year.

While the white chinos would have been quite fitting for the annual tennis championships, the Burberry trench and high-neck sweater would have certainly let the star down when it comes to entering the Royal Box. Hamilton displayed this seasonal look on the front row of the J.W. Anderson show for London Collections: Men last month.

Might have Lewis Hamilton been allowed into the Royal Box wearing this flashy tuxedo? The star - while certainly over-dressed - sported a black bow-tie, brocade blazer and suit trousers to amfAR's charity gala at the Cannes FIlm Festival in May.

Even though we'd give him top fashion marks for matching his sunglasses to his grey tie-dye hooded jacket, Lewis would definitely have been turned away from the Royal Box in this casual get-up. He also donned a a long grey t-shirt, black trousers and black patent shoes at the Topman Design show as part of London Collections for Men.

Lewis Hamilton would have almost made the Royal Box grade in this red suit complete with traditional polka-dot hanky and a black shirt. All he's missing is the tie.

But the shoes, with no socks? We're not sure that's ever acceptable. The F1 star sported this look at the 2015 Elle Style Awards.

Lewis Hamilton was back in his sunglasses and fedora hat combo, which he teamed with a leather jacket, distressed jeans and black trainers. He wouldn't have been given a look in to the Royal Box dressed like this.

Again, Lewis is working a smart, patterned, suit but without the tie, it's a no go for the Royal Box. The star was attending the One For The Boys Fashion Ball last month, and also again sported the dreaded no-socks-with-loafers look. This pair of shoes, though, were marked with his initials. Rock 'n' roll.

Lewis Hamilton would have had no problems had he arrived at Wimbledon in this smart suit and tie combo. The F1 champ wore the Royal Box-appropriate attire to the 2014 Laureus World Sports Awards in Kuala Lumpur last year.

Lewis was back sporting one of his favourite looks of the year again - fedora hat, sunglasses, bomber-style jacket, chunky chain and randomly-striped trousers. But sadly there's no place in the Royal Box for this edgy look.
