Cheryl Fernandez-Versini debuted a dramatic new '70s-inspired hairstyle on Instagram last night (March 2) - and, as usual, the internet went slightly crazy debating her latest look.

From the star's most questionable hairdos - yes, including the infamous transatlantic 'big hair' - to the most gorgeously stunning, here's Cheryl's 11 best and worst barnets, carefully ranked using a top-secret scientific formula*.

11. The Corn-row Braids

We love Cheryl and on the right person we like corn-row braids, but we really hope she never tries them ever again. She sported the look way back in 2003 when she was known as the young Cheryl Tweedy in Girls Aloud, so we'll put it down to 'youthful exuberance'.

Verdict: Sexy? No No No (sorry!)

10. The Beehive

Cheryl debuted an intricate '60s-style beehive 'do at the launch of her first shoe collection in 2011. The bystander's crumpled face behind says it all.

But did Louis Walsh pull it off better when he dressed up as his X Factor colleague for a magazine shoot?

Verdict: Best left to Marge Simpson. Or Louis for that matter.

9. The BIG Hair

Cheryl's attempt at breaking America by joining the panel on The X Factor USA ended in disaster and emotional turmoil. And we don't think the bouffant hairstyle helped.

Even Cheryl herself later stated she wasn't happy with her new look, as she later revealed she sent Simon Cowell a text message with: "F**k you, F**k Fox, F**k the orange and purple outfit. F**k the big hair."

Verdict: Best. Text. Ever. But still doesn't excuse the Austin Powers fancy dress.

8. The Double Bun

We weren't entirely won over by Cheryl's 'Minnie Mouse' double bun hairstyle on The X Factor in 2010. It looks like she's smuggling croissants.

Verdict: Worked better for Princess Leia.

7. The Slick Back

Cheryl chose a dramatic slicked back gothic-inspired look for a Cannes Film Festival party and looked surprisingly sharp. Warning: not everyone can pull this off, Vicky Pollard.

Verdict: Brave gothic glamour.

6. The Chic Chignon

Cheryl worked a chic chignon hairstyle and a complimentary red sheer Zuhair Murad gown on the red carpet at Cannes in 2013.

Verdict: Classic Cannes style.

5. The Fishtail Plait

Cheryl debuted red locks on The X Factor also back in 2010 - with the new colour a reported attempt at a fresh start following her divorce from Ashley Cole. While we love the stylish fishtail plait, we think we prefer Cheryl as a brunette.

Verdict: Keep the fishtail, ditch the red colour.

4. The Tousled Bob

Back in Cannes again - this time in 2012 - Cheryl works the perfect bob with teased curls while wearing a white cut-out Versace gown.

Verdict: Beautiful bob perfection.

3. Back To Her Roots

Cheryl went back to her roots with this darker chestnut hue - complete with complimentary loose curls - for the 2012 National Television Awards.

Verdict: Bravo, Cheryl! It's looks like this that make her such a national obsession.

2. The Cool Ombre Dye

Cheryl announced her return to The X Factor last year, showing off a cool, sleek, on-trend ombre dye.

Verdict: Watch out Louis - Cheryl is back.

1. Voluminous Curls

Perhaps even better than the sleek and shiny 'do above, we loved Cheryl's voluminous blonde curls - as seen here at The X Factor auditions last year.

Verdict: It's a yes from us!
