In the newest issue of Vanity Fair, the notoriously private actress Michelle Williams revealed that she and her partner Phil Elverum got married in a secret, small ceremony in the Adirondack mountains among friends and family.

Michelle called their relationship "very sacred and very special" because of the circumstances that brought them to each other. Both Phil and Michelle have lost previous partners.

Michelle lost Heath Ledger in 2008 to a prescription drug overdose, and Phil's wife Geneviève Castrée passed away in 2016 from cancer.

Since Heath's passing, Michelle has looked for the same kind of "radical acceptance" she felt with him. She tells her daughter Matilda she should do the same.

"I never gave up on love," she said. "I always say to Matilda, 'Your dad loved me before anybody thought I was talented, or pretty, or had nice clothes'."

She's usually very private about her relationships, but she opened up about Phil because Phil "isn't anyone else".

"Ultimately, the way he loves me is the way I want to live my life on the whole," she said. "I work to be free inside of the moment. I parent to let Matilda feel free to be herself, and I am finally loved by someone who makes me feel free."

After finding the type of love she was looking for, she decided to speak about it in the hopes that other women would read what she had to say and feel hopeful that they might find something just as good.

"Don't settle. Don't settle for something that feels like a prison, or is hard, or hurts you," she said. "If it doesn't feel like love, it's not love."
