Riverdale star Charles Melton has received a lot of backlash recently over resurfaced tweets that featured him fat-shaming women and children back in 2012.
While the tweets are old, the new backlash from them has caused Melton to put his Twitter on private, although he still continues to use his Instagram. He recently posted a photo about his new film project The Sun Is Also a Star, which also stars Yara Shahidi.
In a statement, Melton has apologised for the old tweets.
"I'm truly sorry for making inconsiderate comments several years ago and apologise to anyone I hurt," he said. "What I posted and said was immature, offensive and inappropriate. I am ashamed of how I acted and there is no excuse for that behaviour."
Melton has also deleted the old tweets, according to his followers on Twitter. He ended his statement by saying: "I'm striving to do better and will use this experience to grow, helping others to understand how these types of statements are completely unacceptable."
Melton is one of the newest members of the Riverdale cast. He joined in season 2 after Ross Butler left the role of Reggie Mantle and Melton was brought in to replace him. Some fans of the show are asking for the producers of Riverdale and The CW to take action against Melton for his tweets.
What to Read Next
There are also other fans who believe that Melton shouldn't be receiving any backlash or punishment due to the age of the tweets.
Melton is expected to return for the third season of Riverdale, which will air this fall.
