It looks like Ariana Grande could be gearing up to move her career in a new direction as rumours suggest she'll be swapping the studio for a stint on Broadway.

And not just any role either.

According to The Sun, Ariana has got her eye on the big part, apparently preparing to take on the iconic role of Elphaba in Wicked, which has previously been played by Frozen's Idina Menzel, Eden Espinosa and Kerry Ellis to name a few.

Digital Spy has reached out to reps for Ariana and the Broadway show for comment.

It's not the first time Ariana has been linked to the role of Elphaba, as during her episode of Carpool Karaoke: The Series last year with Seth MacFarlane, the singer revealed she would "do it tomorrow" if the role ever came her way.

"I was a huge theatre nerd my whole life, still am," she added. "It's what I put on when I need to restore my soul and heal myself. It brings you back to home."

And, let's be honest, we all know Ariana has the vocal chops to hold her own in the role too.

After wrapping up her Dangerous Woman tour last year, Ariana Grande appears to have been taking some time off after a busy period in the studio, with her last social media post coming on New Year's Day and teasing some vocals she'd been recording.

The singer was reportedly scheduled to perform at last month's BRIT Awards too, but pulled out for unknown reasons at the last minute and was replaced by Liam Gallagher, who paid tribute to those who died in the Manchester Arena bombings with his performance.
