The debate over whether we should or shouldn't eat me is one that isn't going to go away any time soon, but there is a way to discuss the topic properly - and then there's what Jeremy Vine did on BBC Radio 2 yesterday (January 31).

The host was interviewing controversial vegan activist Joey Carbstrong, a former gang member who's known for being pretty outspoken.

And right from the word go Vine fired up his guest, as he left a ham and cheese sandwich on his desk. Awkward.

The incident then spurred the following conversation:

"I'm upset to see your sandwich has a piece of a pig's body in there. A dead pig that did not want to die," Carbstrong said.

''Ham is a euphemism that actually comes from the flesh of a dead pig... I'd like you to call it the dead body of an animal who didn't want to die.''

When Vine asked if the cheese was a "problem", Carbstrong replied; ''The cheese comes from a mother who had her children taken from her and had hands shoved in her anus and was artificially inseminated with bull semen".

He then added that vegans think that dairy farmers are "rapists", although he wouldn't use that word himself without explanation.

Listeners didn't really think the interview was enough of a thorough debate to change people's minds, but Vine himself was put off eating the ham and cheese sandwich, possibly for ever. So that's something, right?
