Memorial Day, taking place on the last Monday of May each year, is an opportunity to remember and honour those who lost their lives while serving in the US armed forces.

It's also an opportunity for celebrities to do damage to their public profile with inappropriate social media posts.

Ivanka Trump made a bold bid for public condemnation with her brand's suggestion to "make champagne popsicles this #MemorialDay", but rivalling her for online disapproval was Ariel Winter's message to her fellow Americans.

Choosing to deliver her words with a bikini picture, the image was at best random. All we're saying is, if you held a caption competition for the picture, we reckon it would take a while before someone came up with, "Happy #MemorialDay 🌊"

Negative responses included: "What has that got to do with Memorial Day? Just an excuse to get half naked."

Another wrote: "Not an appropriate pic for Memorial Day..."

But there were also positive comments like "It's too much beauty", and Winter did post a more conventional tribute soon afterwards.

"Could not be more grateful to all of the men and women who risk their lives to protect ours and our freedom. We are all forever indebted to your service. Thank you," she wrote for her follow-up post.

The Modern Family star has previously used Instagram to stand up to bullies.

Last year the actress, who says she has dealt with body shaming since she was 12, wrote: "Stop the hate. Accept all that you are and know your flaws are what make you the PERFECT you. I love my fans and I love my bullies for what they truly NEED is love."
