Notable film roles included playing a sinister leader of the secret police in the live-action adaptation of Alan Moore and David Lloyd's dystopian comic V for Vendetta, and a more comical portrayal of the head of MI6 in Rowan Atkinson's James Bond spoof Johnny English.

On stage, he was a veteran of numerous Shakespearean productions, and earned both an Olivier and Tony Award nomination for his leading role in King Charles III.
