Oscar Pistorius was released from prison on Monday (October 19), after serving one year of his five-year sentence.

The Paralympian, 28, was let out on correctional supervision - a form of house arrest - Correctional Services spokesman Manelisi Wolela confirmed.

Pistorius began serving time in October 2014 after he was convicted of shooting and killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. He maintained throughout his trial that he thought Steenkamp was an intruder when he shot her.

He was due to be released on August 21 after serving one-sixth of his sentence with good behaviour.

However, South Africa's justice minister Michael Masutha blocked the release, ruling that the step was "premature".

In March, Pistorius's lawyers failed to block state prosecutors from appealing his acquittal on murder charges. This appeal is scheduled to take place in November.
