Federer will now go on to face Novak Djokovic in Sunday's final, and will be looking to win a record eighth title at the London championships.
Following Murray's semi-final defeat, the nation took to Twitter to vent their frustration and offer commiserations to the British number one.
Here is Digital Spy's roundup of the best reactions...
A number of people gallantly praised 33-year-old Federer for being the oldest man to reach a Wimbledon final since 39-year-old Ken Rosewall in 1974:
Like a classy old wine, he just gets better with time. Truly vintage performance. The best stats I have ever seen #federer #Wimbledon

Naturally, Murray's nationality was called into question (with isandymurraystillbritish.com also being updated to reflect the result):
I'm guessing that Andy #Murray is Scottish again tonight then?

With some even making topical references:

But amid the puns and jokes about Murray's "boring" reputation...

Only thing more torturous an ordeal on TV than an EastEnders omnibus on continuous loop has to be a losing Andy Murray interview. #Wimbledon

There was still some welcome optimism:
Well at least I have the rest of my evening back. #Murray #Wimbledon

On the bright side, we get to spend Sunday afternoon outdoors. #Murray
