The National Gallery has banned selfie sticks.

The telescopic rods have become popular in the UK, but the London art museum has prohibited them "in order to protect paintings, individual privacy and the overall visitor experience".

Art critic Brian Sewell told The Times: "They are possibly quite dangerous to the art work and cause appalling crowding around a painting.

"Anyone who actually wants to go and see a painting can't because people are too busy taking photos. I've seen things in the National Gallery which make my hair stand on end."

The National Gallery is the latest London venue to ban selfie sticks, following The London O2, SSE Wembley Arena and the O2 Academy Brixton.

Premier League football clubs Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur also previously banned them from their stadiums.
