Tony Hawk has followed up his popular Funny or Die outing by testing a real hoverboard.

The former professional skateboarder's original 'trial' of the tech, part of an elaborate prank, has been viewed almost 15 million times since it was posted earlier this year.

However, Hawk has since been invited by The Ride Channel's David Carnie to try out the technology from Arx Pax for real.

Speaking about the prank video, the company's founders Greg and Jill Henderson said: "Our hearts did sink for a moment. But I think it raised awareness, because - what was it? - 13 or 14 million pent-up hoverboard fans wanted that and their dreams were shattered. And hopefully you guys can sort of help convey to people that this technology works."

However, Hawk joked: "It can't be me. Nobody believes me anymore. I'm the boy who cried hoverboard."

In his piece, Carnie recalled the moment Hawk used the hoverboard for the first time.

"The rocket scientist fired up the engines. And lo and behold, the hoverboard rose off the copper floor and floated about an inch above the surface," he said.

"Seeing it on video is one thing, but in person it's remarkable. The two scientists steadied the thing, and Tony mounted the hoverboard. The scientists let go. And Tony Hawk was hovering."

Describing it as being like a "skimboard that's out of control", Hawk struggled to ride the board, but eventually managed to successfully complete a skateboarding trick on it.
