Lindsay Lohan has said that being in solitary confinement in prison was the first time she has had "silence" in her life.

Speaking on The Jonathan Ross Show, the actress said that she has only been able to find peace since leaving Los Angeles.

"I was in solitary confinement for 14 days," she told Ross. "[The prison officers] said it was for 'safety purposes'. I said, 'What am I going to do?'

"It was very scary, it was very jarring. The weirdest part for me was I finally had silence in my life. As terrified as I was and as scared as I was, I finally felt like I didn't have to answer to anyone and I didn't have to do anything for anyone. That was the weirdest part of it."

When Ross asked if it had ultimately been a beneficial experience, Lohan answered: "Two days would have been enough."

The actress, who is known for her roles in Mean Girls, The Parent Trap and Labour Pains, said that leaving Los Angeles to star in the London production of Speed-the-Plow has been good for her.

"For me it was more of taking myself out of - and I really do mean this - Los Angeles," she said. "Getting back to my family and my roots. I needed to find a spiritual connection.

"I never really had that in the past and that was really important to me. Taking control of my life rather than just surrounding myself with distractions and people and things and noise. So once I'm able to shut the noise off, I'm good and I've stayed in that for a while."

The Jonathan Ross Show airs on Saturday (October 25) at 10.10pm on ITV.

Earlier this week, Ross signed a deal to stay with ITV until the end of 2015.
