Nicki Minaj denies insulting Iggy Azalea at BET Awards

Fans believed Minaj threw shade on Azalea during BET Awards acceptance speech.
By Ash PercivalPublished: 03 July 2014

Nicki Minaj has denied making an on-stage dig at Iggy Azalea at last Sunday's (June 29) BET Awards.

After winning Best Female Hip Hop Artist at the awards over Azalea, Minaj appeared to take a swipe at her rival, when she said: "What I want the world to know about Nicki Minaj is when you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it."

Fans believed Minaj's comments were in reference to allegations that Azalea used ghost-writers on some of her recent tracks. However, the former American Idol judge has now clarified her comments on Twitter, heaping praise on Azalea.

"The media puts words in my mouth all the time and this is no different. I will always take a stance on women writing b/c I believe in us!", she wrote.

"I believe we're smart enough to write down our own thoughts and perspective, just like the men do. I've been saying this for five years."

I've congratulated Iggy on the success of Fancy, publicly. She should be very proud of that. All the women nominated should b proud.

Azalea previously addressed the issue on Instagram, posting that she was "unbothered" by Minaj's comments.

"I have to say, the general explosion of pettiness online in the last few days is hard to ignore and honestly...lame," she wrote. "If I had won the BET award that would've been great, but it wasn't my year and I don't mind - so you shouldn't either.

"Generally speaking I'm unbothered by anything that 'happened' at the BET awards, and just feel worn out by everyone trying to make me have wars with people all the time."

Azalea added: "Anyone who wishes me well is welcome in my life and those who don't can't get any more of my time. I hate to see everyone exhausting themselves on my behalf over things that I'm still not 100% sure even exist and don't matter. Just let it go."
