Karina Smirnoff did not know what else to do but give Maksim Chmerkovskiy a kiss when he complimented her on Monday's Dancing with the Stars semi-final show.

The professional ballroom dancer performed with former High School Musical star Corbin Bleu and the pair got excellent feedback from the judges.

Guest panelist Chmerkovskiy told the actor: "I think you have a huge advantage in this competition. You have what I consider to be Top 5 best female dancers of all time."

The comment left 35-year-old Smirnoff flustered as the words came from her ex-boyfriend as opposed to fellow panelists Len Goodman, Bruni Tonioli or Carrie Ann Inaba.

"He had such a sweet comment, and I didn't know what else to do," she told Us Weekly. "I was like, that's so sweet. Should I give him a kiss?"

Despite having been in her position before he left the show last year, she thinks he did a brilliant job critiquing them.

"I think he did a great job," she said. "He had a lot of constructive criticism because he has been on both sides now, as a judge and as a dancer, and he knows how much work we put in every week getting the dances ready."
