Tony Blackburn is stepping down from his BBC Radio job on Sunday afternoons.

The DJ, who's been on the airwaves since 1964, announced on social media site X yesterday (February 8): "Hi there, just wanted to let you know that I have decided to end my @BBCLOCALRADIO Sunday afternoon show that goes out on @BBCBerkshire @BBCOxford @BBCRadioSolent and @BBCSounds.

"My last show will be on March 24th."

Blackburn elaborated: "I have been a part of the Berkshire line up since 2012 and have loved doing the show bringing music from the 50's up to the present day. I have loved the callers and the fun we've had.

"At some stage I might come back to BBC Local Radio but, for now, I'm going to focus on my @BBCRadio2 shows, Sounds Of The Sixties and the Golden Hour and my theatre tour which comes back in March."

As well as his beloved radio work, the 81-year-old is known for winning the first-ever series of I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! back in 2002.

To say he's not impressed with the modern programme would be an understatement, though, as he told The Sun last year: "I loved doing the show, and I hate to criticise, but I was watching it last night and it's just horrible.

"Eating bits of [animal] penis is revolting. I don't think that is entertainment. I can't watch it. I turn away. I don't want to see celebrities vomiting on TV, especially after eating antelopes.

"I don't preach vegetarianism," added Blackburn. "People can do what they want, but we've seen it all before, it's a bit old hat now and the shock value is not there anymore. Last night he swallowed a pig's bollock and said he could feel the hairs – it's awful."
