Luke Evans has confirmed he's returning to "where it all began" for him with a show on London's West End.

Many will know Luke from his roles in blockbusters like Beauty and the Beast, The Hobbit series, and numerous Fast and Furious films – as well TV shows like The Alienist and, of course, his music career.

Now, you'll be able to see him alongside Downton Abbey star Penelope Wilton in a new play called Backstairs Billy at the Duke of York's Theatre in central London.

Set in 1979 at a time of major social unrest and change, Backstairs Billy stars Luke as William Tallon, a long-serving member of staff for Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother (played by Wilton). The name of the play is the nickname Tallon was given by the tabloid press at the time.

"When I read the script, it made me giggle out loud so hard," he told The Guardian. "It's just so entertaining and such a joyous story about these two people: the Queen Mother, who was super famous, but also Billy. He was always there and spent most of his life working for her."

Penelope described Backstairs Billy as "a joyful and compassionate play", adding: "It brings the Queen Mother into Technicolor rather than being a pastel person in pale chiffon.

"She suddenly becomes a very vibrant person and we see her for herself, not just for being the Queen's mother. Billy allowed her to be who she was."

Backstairs Billy is written by Marcelo dos Santos and directed by Michael Grandage. Further casting is yet to be announced.

Speaking to his Instagram followers recently, Luke teased news of an exciting new theatre project. He said: "So, I don't do a lot of these videos – I'm not really great at them! – but when I usually do them, I've got something interesting to tell you and today, I do.

"If you know anything about my career, you'll know that I started on the stage. I did a year's treading the boards, and loved every minute of it. That was 16 years ago... the last time I did a play in London, and I'm excited to tell you that I'm going back!

"I'm going to be doing a play at the end of this year, in London, and I'm very excited. I'm also very nervous and I'm looking forward to it very much, to be entertaining you where it all began for me back on the West End stage."

Luke's upcoming movie Our Son recently premiered at Tribeca, and he stars opposite Billy Porter. The actors play a divorcing couple who are negotiating a custody agreement for their 8-year-old son.

Speaking to People, Luke said that the experience of filming Our Son was "traumatic at times, painful at times, very real, very visceral and very relatable".

He added: "You don't have to be gay to enjoy this or understand this story. People all over the world go through divorce, breakups and custody battles.

"Families break up all the time, but this is the story of hope, and how they get through it, and how a new chapter is started, but a different kind of chapter."

Coming up, Luke will also be appearing in Michael Sheen's TV directing debut The Way for the BBC, alongside Callum Scott Howells and Steffan Rhodri.

He's also part of the cast for Dan Levy's upcoming Netflix movie Good Grief, which the Schitt's Creek star and co-creator has described as "a love story about friendship".

In July 2013, Kate joined the DS staff team as chief sub-editor and following six years as the site's managing editor, their role expanded to incorporate Hearst UK's entertainment portfolio (including Digital Spy and its sibling titles Best and Inside Soap) between late 2024 and early 2026.
Kate has worked as a writer and editor since 2006, with bylines syndicated across the Hearst network and at organisations including Metro. They started their career as a TV production runner for the BBC and contributed to various music websites, blogs and zines while based in Manchester.

Kate's screen passions include Taskmaster (their biggest career regret remains turning down the opportunity to visit the house), nature documentaries, and live sport (up there with the greatest of all soap operas although if asked to choose, it's Corrie… every time).
Her highlights while working at DS have included interviewing Stevie Nicks on the red carpet for her documentary In Your Dreams, sitting at a press roundtable with Formula 1 commentary icon Murray Walker, watching a life-sized LEGO car being driven around Silverstone, writing an album-by-album retrospective of Lady Gaga's genre-defying career for Living Legends, and raising awareness of receiving and understanding a late-in-life ADHD diagnosis through the lens of Bianca and Freddie's EastEnders storyline.
Upon remembering to log off the internet, Kate enjoys live theatre, dance and comedy, appreciating nature, baking (badly), tending a recently-rented allotment (equally badly) and pampering one very spoiled rescue cat named Jolene.
