"I had a sneaking suspicion that it might do alright," Lorde said of her breakout hit 'Royals'. It could quite possibly be the biggest unforeseen success story of the year. A 16-year-old singer-songwriter from New Zealand has breezed up the US Hot 100 with seemingly carefree ease that only a nonchalant teenager can pull off. And it's this laid-back attitude paired with youthful rebellion against popular culture that is most likely the key to its success.
"But every song's like, gold teeth, Grey Goose, tripping in the bathroom/ Bloodstains, ball gowns, trashing the hotel room/ We don't care, we're driving Cadillacs in our dreams," Lorde shrugs over feather-light drum machine beats and wobbly bass, acting as an antidote to the brash electronics of on-trend EDM. The result is an addictive hook that thrives on its simplicity, and here comes our sneaking suspicion: Lorde's success is here to stay.
