"Once his A-level exams are out of the way in June expect to hear a lot more from Chipmunk," says an anonymous record label worker on the Tottenham rapper's MySpace page. It may not be particularly rock 'n' roll, but it's a neat reminder that the latest artist to emerge from London's flourishing grime/urban scene is only just old enough to buy himself a beer in a pub. For an artist who's already cracked the top ten (with a bit of help from DJ Ironik and Elton John), he's still a relatively fresh-faced pup of a popstar.
His latest single 'Diamond Rings' shows no signs of youthful naivety, however, boasting just as much pop polish as recent offerings from N-Dubz and Tinchy Stryder. His bragging raps ("Girls see me and scream cause I'm on the TV") may be lacking in originality, but the track's breezy, ska-infused shuffle and feisty female backing vocals are infectious enough to suggest Chipmunk may have a future in the music industry. Now all he has to do is finish his BA degree and we might just get a full album.
