Tonight (May 19) sees the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 in Vienna properly kick start with the first semi-final round, which will air on BBC Three from 8pm.

Below are the 16 songs that will compete in the first round as part of Digital Spy's ultimate guide to this year's competition.

1. Albania

Who: Elhaida Dani has had great success in past competitions, winning Star Academy Albania in 2009 and The Voice of Italy in 2013.

The song: 'I'm Alive' is a guitar-led track that builds into the kind of massive anthem that, with the right staging, could go down very well at Eurovision.

2. Armenia

What to Read Next

Who: All six members of Genealogy come from a different continent, but each have Armenian descent. They were put together especially for Eurovision.

The song: Despite the novel approach, 'Face The Shadow' is actually a bit drab. Only time will tell if their career will last beyond the competition.

3. Belarus

Who: Uzari has competed twice before (in 2012 with 'The Winner' and 2013 with 'Secret'), both placing within the Top 10. Maimuna is a trained violinist.

The song: "Time is like thunder, beating like thunder," Uzari bellows on Belarus's entry 'Time'. Questionable lyrics aside, this is a classic Euro-stomper that could fare well in Vienna this May.

4. Belgium

Who: Loïc Nottet was a contestant on The Voice Belgique and finished second overall.

The song: "Listen to the sound of thunder," Nottet croons on the opening. While it appears mainland Europe have put out a memo concerning thunder metaphors this year, Nottet's track 'Rhythm Inside' stands apart from its competitors for its sparse production that echoes the stylings of a certain teen prodigy called Lorde.

5. Denmark

Who: Don't be fooled by the name; there's absolutely nothing anarchic about pop-rock band Anti Social Media. They somewhat resemble a Danish Scouting For Girls.

The song: 'The Way You Are' is a happy-go-lucky bop, that results in the kind of inoffensive sing-along that your gran will be picking up the phone for. It's nice enough, if not a bit forgettable.

6. Estonia

Who: Elina Born previously entered the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013 with 'Enough', while Stig Rästa wrote and produced the track himself. This pair won the chance to represent Estonia with 79% of the vote, which is pretty astonishing really.

The song: The contemplative 'Goodbye To Yesterday' is a nod-along duet with flourishes of brass and some taut guitar riffs.

7. F.Y.R. Macedonia

Who: Like a lot of this year's entries, Daniel Kajmakoski has a talent show background, winning the first series of X Factor Adria in 2013.

The song: While 'Esenski Lisja' rolls off the tongue, Daniel Kajmakoski will actually perform an English version of the song titled 'Autumn Leaves' in Vienna. While us Europeans will be in the throes of spring come May, guest nation Australia will actually be heading into autumn, so this will be quite on message for them.

8. Finland

Who: Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät formed in 2009 when the members met through Lythy, a charity for adults with developmental disabilities, and were more recently the focus of documentary film The Punk Syndrome.

The song: Finland have been victorious in previous years with a harder sound (see: 2006 champs Lordi), and Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät have already been singled out as the first punk rock band to enter the Eurovision Song Contest.

9. Georgia

Who: Nina Sublatti co-wrote the song with Thomas G:son and has previously revealed that she laid down the bones of the track after waking up in the middle of the night.

The song: Taking heed from its namesake, 'Warrior' is a stomping and dramatic affair.

10. Greece

Who: Maria-Elena Kyriakou first came to fame in her homeland after winning - yep, you've guessed it - the first series of The Voice of Greece last year.

The song: 'One Last Breath' is a soaring ballad, but doesn't have enough oomph to go all the way.

11. Hungary

Who: Singer-songwriter Boggie first gained media attention (and over 5 million YouTube hits, no less) for her 'Nouveau Parfum' music video in January 2014, which saw her being retouched on image editing software while performing the song.

The song: 'Wars For Nothing', however, is slightly more cheery, and sees the star singing the traditional folk-tinged serenade with the backing of her fellow Hungarians.

12. Moldova

Who: Ukrainian singer Eduard Romanyuta has actually competed to represent his home country three times before, but was never selected. However, Moldova has chosen the 22-year-old to front their entry.

The song: 'I Want Your Love' is a typically synthetic slice of Europop with an obvious motif of going beyond the call of reason to declare your love for someone.

13. Romania

Who: Voltaj have been an active band since 1982 and have no less than 18 former members, which puts the numerous Sugababes line-up changes into perspective really.

The song: The group were heavily criticised when they announced plans to perform their entry in English, so instead opted for a blended version with some Romanian lyrics too. 'De La Capăt' stands for 'From The Beginning' in English.

14. Russia

Who: Polina Gagarina is a Russian singer, songwriter actress and model.

The song: 'A Million Voices' is a solid pop ballad, and Polina's vocal towers above the flourishes of orchestral strings and epic beats, but there's something about the lyrics "Praying for peace and healing/ I hope we can start again/ We believe we believe/ In the dream," that doesn't quite sit well with Russia's current popularity in international affairs.

15. Serbia

Who: Bojana Stamenov is Serbian singer best known for recording jazz and R&B influenced music.

The song: While the track was composed by Vladimir Graic - and thus in keeping with the Eurovision rule book - the lyrics for 'Beauty Never Lies' were actually penned by US songwriter Charlie Mason, who has previously worked with the likes of Miley Cyrus, and co-wrote last year's winning entry 'Rise Like A Phoenix' performed by Conchita Wurst.

16. The Netherlands

Who: An established star in The Netherlands, Trijntje Oosterhuis will be celebrating 25 years in the biz in 2015.

The song: After finishing second with The Common Linnets last year, The Netherlands are hoping to claim glory with 'Walk Along' in Vienna come May. The track was written by former Eurovision contender Anouk Teeuwe, who represented the Netherlands with 'Birds' back in 2013. It's a catchy guitar-led bop-along with an earworm hook of "why-ay-ay-ay".
