Gary Barlow's Let It Shine pretty much thrives on the ridiculous - from that shower based dance sequence that opened episode one to the contestant that looked just like Robbie Williams - and we wouldn't have it any other way.

But even we were a bit taken aback when The Sun reported that Ricki Lake was going to act as a guest judge for the first live show.

However, this isn't a case of someone making a booking mix-up, as Ricki's casting actually makes a lot of sense.

You see, while most of us know Ricki Lake as the host of her chat show, which ran from the late nineties until the mid noughties (and re-ran for a lot longer), she's got a long history with musicals.

The star actually made her film debut as Tracy Turnblad in the original Hairspray film by John Waters, which was released in 1988 and also starred Blondie frontwoman Debbie Harry.

Ricki is so well connected to Hairspray, in fact, she came back to cameo in the 2007 remake and last year's Hairspray Live!

She also took part in Dancing with the Stars and managed to get to third place, so she may slip in a few catchphrases from Len Goodman and Bruno Toniolli when it comes to her upcoming judging stint.

Let in Shine continues tonight (January 28) at 7pm on BBC One.
