Ed Sheeran's been awol for exactly a (leap) year today (December 13) – but rejoice, for he has returned.

Because it goes against current pop rules, Ed hasn't actually, directly said new music will be with us very soon. Instead he's posted a picture of a blue square on Twitter and changed his profile picture to the same thing.

So we're thinking either new music or a Blue collaboration.

Ed took a 'social media hiatus' last year to start working on his third album, after larking around tricking people into thinking he'd got a massive lion tattoo.

As it's been over two years since he released his last record x, it feels like about time we had the follow-up, especially now Beyoncé and Adele have got their huge releases out of the way.

Ed teased what we can expect from the follow-up to x over a year ago, promising it's going to be devastatingly honest.

"There's a lot more heart in it. It's a lot more honest than the last record," he said.

"The last record was honest. There was a couple of songs like 'The Man', which I kind of wish I didn't put on.

"But there's probably seven songs on this new record that I wish I didn't put on when I release it. They're all a bit too brutally honest."

We haven't been this excited for a new record since Daphne and Celeste announced a comeback.
