MIA has pulled out of Afropunk London after being criticised for headlining the festival in light of her controversial comments on the Black Lives Matter movement.
The musician gave an interview in April in which she said the Black Lives Matter movement was "not a new thing" and questioned when artists like Beyoncé and Kendrick Lemar would draw focus on Muslim and Syrian lives.
MIA has now said she will no longer perform at Afropunk, which takes its name from James Spooner's 2003 documentary film on black punks in America.
"If pulling the show saves the cause and lives then that's what I'll do," MIA wrote on Twitter.
"Sorry I'm not doin Afropunk. I've been told to stay in my lane. Ha there is no lane for 65mil refugees who's lanes are blown up! #nolanes".
Digital Spy has reached out to Afropunk for comment.
