The Irish singer is apparently outpacing bandmates Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson in putting a solo project together, according to The Sun.
When he's not busy training for Soccer Aid or on the golf course, Niall is reportedly putting the finishing touches on a record deal with Simon Cowell's Syco for some brand new music.
Over the weekend, Niall revealed to Digital Spy that he's been tinkering away on a batch of new songs.
"Yeah, I've just been in the studio, nothing sneaky, nothing in particular going on," Niall shared.
"Writing is always something I've enjoyed, as you know, and I've written with a few of the lads I've made relationships with down the years so I've been able to call up someone, 'Do you wanna write? Yeah, cool, let's go in the studio and write'."
Meanwhile, 1D bandmate Louis Tomlinson is currently taking time away from music for fatherhood, while Liam Payne galivants around Cannes and other red carpet events with girlfriend Cheryl Fernandez-Versini.
Harry Styles has his own solo project in the works - although it's an acting role in director Christopher Nolan's World War II drama Dunkirk.
Shedding his trademark long locks for Dunkirk, Harry will play a brave soldier opposite Tom Hardy, Sir Kenneth Branagh and Cillian Murphy.
Harry's also been rumoured to be prepping solo music - but can he beat Niall to the punch? Only time will tell.
