Miley Cyrus, Ed Sheeran and Katy Perry were among the major winners at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards.
Cyrus triumphed in the prestigious Video of the Year category with her clip for 'Wrecking Ball', winning out over Iggy Azalea, Beyoncé, Sia and Pharrell Williams.

The 'Wrecking Ball' singer chose not to speak after being named the Video of the Year winner, instead turning the microphone over to a young man named Jesse.
Jesse used the time allotted for Cyrus's remarks to speak frankly about the plight facing homeless youth in the US.
"Thank you all - my name is Jesse, and I am accepting this award on behalf of the 1.6 million homeless youth," he said as Cyrus was shown tearing up.

Other major winners included Katy Perry's triumph in the Best Female Video category for 'Dark Horse', while Ed Sheeran received Best Male Video for 'Sing'.
Fifth Harmony earned the Artist to Watch Award, Ariana Grande won Best Pop Video for 'Problem' and Drake was given the Best Hip-Hop Video prize for 'Hold On, We're Going Home'.
The night was capped off by Beyoncé being given the MTV Video Vanguard Award by her husband Jay Z and daughter Blue Ivy Carter.
The 2014 MTV Video Music Awards were held at The Forum in Inglewood, California.
