Demi Lovato slams Lady Gaga's SXSW set: 'Eating disorders not artsy at all'

Former Disney star criticises singer's 'Swine' performance at SXSW with vomiting artist.
By Alison RowleyPublished: 14 March 2014

Demi Lovato has condemned Lady Gaga's recent SXSW festival performance.

The 'Skyscraper' singer took to Twitter today (March 14) to criticise the 27-year-old's performance of 'Swine', which involved vomiting performance artist Millie Brown.

Sad... As if we didn't have enough people glamorizing eat disorders already. Bottom line, it's not "cool" or "artsy" at all.

— demetria lovato (@ddlovato) March 14, 2014

Lovato suffered from bulimia and entered treatment for an eating disorder and other issues back in 2010.

Gaga has also spoken about her past struggles with her body image, but also worked with Brown - who ingests coloured milk before sticking her fingers down her throat and regurgitating the liquid - on the visuals for her 'The Monster Ball' tour.

"It's not "shade" and it's not "hate"," added Lovato following an angry response from the 'Applause' singer's fans.

"Someone has to come forward and say it and I'll take the heat for it.

So it's cool if I do a speech about self-harm and then proceed to watch someone cut themselves on my stage? ... http://t.co/XE4CWEYtDE

"@ladygaga you're SO talented," she continued, tweeting the star directly, "if not one of the most talented in our industry PERIOD.

"Dope is INCREDIBLE.. but you don't have to do that"

Gaga is yet to respond directly to the criticism, but previously said she admired Brown's "artistic spirit" and "believed in... what [her performance] meant to the song" during her keynote speech at the Texas festival.
