Interstellar has topped the UK box office on its debut weekend on release.

The Christopher Nolan-directed sci-fi epic earned £5.3 million to secure first place ahead of Mike Leigh's Mr Turner, which pulled in an impressive £1 million on its second weekend on release.

Interstellar's haul is the fourth-highest UK opening in Nolan's career, behind The Dark Knight Rises, The Dark Knight and Inception.

The second placed Mr Turner has now earned £2.6 million from UK cinemas, beating Vera Drake to become the most successful film of acclaimed director Leigh's career.

Last week's number one movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles slips to number three, while Gone Girl and Fury complete the top five.
