Superman's first trailer has now landed online as an early Christmas treat – and Superman doesn't look in the best shape.
The dramatic trailer opens with Superman (David Corenswet) crashing to the ground, bloodied and bruised. As we see glimpses of Clark Kent and Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) at the Daily Planet, Superman whistles for Krypto's help to take him "home".
We then see Superman in more heroic mode, but also the subject of the public's rage at one point. The trailer also gives us our first official look at Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi) and more.

Talking at a trailer preview event earlier this week, which Digital Spy attended, writer/director James Gunn revealed that he wanted the first trailer to "really get the essence of the film".
What to Read Next
"The film is optimistic, yet not without its darker moments. It's a big science fiction movie, but at the same time, incredibly grounded in the way we treat the characters and everything else," he explained.
"So I wanted it to be something that was the essence of Superman, that was the Superman that I grew up with that I loved, but also something new at the same time. I think taking on Superman for me has been paradoxical with all of those things, because you're wanting to do something totally new and yet you're wanting to do something traditional."
The first synopsis for Superman promises a take on the iconic superhero "who's driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind" in Gunn's "signature style".

Even the trailer doesn't shed much light on what the actual plot will be or who is responsible for the beatdown on Superman. But Gunn did tease that we're going to be "freaked out" by "how important" journalism is to the story.
"The fact that they are both journalists and the fact that Lois is as good at journalism as Superman is protecting the world is an important part of the film," he noted.
"And I think that Lois Lane is someone who is going to be admired by boys and girls around the world for her pursuit of the truth and her strength in that."
Back in July, Gunn revealed filming on Superman had wrapped with a snowy picture of the cast during the first week of production in Norway.

"Thank you all from the bottom of my heart," he wrote in the caption.
"It has been an honour. The destination has been Superman, but the journey has been the toil and the laughter and the emotions and ideas and magic we've shared together on set – and for that I am forever grateful."
Before the trailer's release, Gunn has also been defending the use of Superman's red trunks in the new suit.
Superman will be released in cinemas on July 11, 2025.
