The first trailer for He Went That Way, a new true crime thriller starring Euphoria's Jacob Elordi and Star Trek's Zachary Quinto, has been released.

Based on the harrowing true story of serial killer Larry Lee Ranes, the film follows a celebrity animal handler who finds himself on an unexpected road trip with a teenage mass murderer.

"Set in 1964, He Went That Way is a taut thriller based on a true crime story that puts a wicked spin on the buddy road trip film," reads the official synopsis for the movie.

"The film follows 19-year-old serial killer Bobby (Elordi) as he is picked up by a celebrity animal handler, Jim (Quinto), on a desolate stretch of Route 66 with a priceless cargo in tow: Jim's chimpanzee, Spanky, an American TV darling.

"As stress between Bobby and Jim rises and their fiery personalities combust, the road only becomes more treacherous the farther they go."

The spine-tingling trailer sees Elordi's character pose as an unsuspecting hitchhiker in the deserted Midwest, who agrees to travel with the animal handler.

Bobby's mask slowly begins to slip when he hears Jim's chimpanzee in the back of the car. His discovery ultimately sparks a chain of shocking events that result in devastating consequences.

Directed by Jeff Darling and written by Evan M. Wiener, the film also stars Suits' Patrick J. Adams.

While the thriller is yet to have a UK release date, it premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. He Went That Way will debut in US cinemas from January 5, 2024, before being available to watch on demand on January 12, 2024.

It's been a busy year for Elordi, who has recently landed his newest role in an Australian miniseries. The Saltburn actor will star in The Narrow Road to the Deep, a love story set in the aftermath of the Second World War.

He Went That Way doesn't have a UK release date yet.
