May December, the new film starring Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore, has released its first trailer.

The latest feature from acclaimed director Todd Haynes follows "married couple Gracie and Joe Atherton-Yoo (Moore and Charles Melton) whose 23-year age gap sparked a notorious tabloid romance that gripped the nation two decades ago.

"Cut to modern day, and their marriage comes under renewed strain when Hollywood actress Elizabeth Berry (Portman) comes to spend time with the family to better understand Gracie, who she will be playing in a film about the scandal."

The first trailer teases at the complicated relationship between the three leads, with all characters seemingly harbouring secrets and darker thoughts as the lines between reality and fiction are blurred.

May December received acclaim upon its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, with the film currently boasting an impressive 90% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from its first 59 reviews.

Portman, who has also appeared in both the Star Wars and Thor franchises, spoke earlier this year about May December, praising the themes of the project as well as her co-star Moore.

"I was sent this script for May December and I was completely blown away by it," Portman told British Vogue. "It was so nuanced, so specific, and the story was so interesting and surprising. I sent it to Todd, whom I've admired for so long and, luckily, he was interested."

"It was extraordinary to get to work with him on it. It was really fun to get to explore being an actress, and what it means to depict a real-life story. It gets you thinking about how you… affect a story by your portrayal of it. And it's also about whether or not art can be amoral," she continued.

"She's [Moore] one of my favourite actresses and her collaborations with Todd – Safe, Far from Heaven – have been among my favourite performances from her so to not only get to work with her, but to get to work with them together was just the gift of a lifetime."

May December arrives in UK and US cinemas on November 17 before premiering on Sky Cinema in the UK and Netflix in the US on December 1.
