Shazam! Fury of the Gods trailer reveals first look at DC sequel

Shazam! Fury of the Gods has unleashed its first trailer ahead of the DC sequel's release in cinemas later this year.

The trailer was debuted during the movie's Comic-Con panel today (July 23) which featured director David F Sandberg and cast members including Zachary Levi, who had teased the panel earlier this month.

With references to fellow DC heroes Aquaman, Batman and The Flash, the trailer starts with Shazam in a crisis about just how he's using his super powers: "What am I even contributing?"

It seems that the Shazam Family are all off doing their own things, but luckily the family come together to face the considerable threat of Hespera and Kalypso, who seem a bit annoyed that they took the powers in the first place.

As well as Levi, Shazam! Fury of the Gods brings back Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, Djimon Hounsou, Adam Brody and Grace Fulton from the first movie, among others.

There are some major new names involved in the sequel too with Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu playing Atlas's daughters Hespera and Kalypso, respectively, while West Side Story breakout star Rachel Zegler also stars.

We had been expecting to wait until June 2023 for Shazam! Fury of the Gods, but the movie was moved forward to December 2022 as a result of delays to fellow DC sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Today also saw a Comic-Con outing for Black Adam, a character that many fans expect to cross over with Shazam in a future DC movie.

Back in July 2019, Levi seemingly ruled out the two characters crossing over in Shazam! Fury of the Gods. "If we do a third Shazam! and a second Black Adam... that's where we would [meet]," he noted.

"Like [Shazam and] Black Adam, they're doppelgängers right, the evil twin to who I am. So that's got to be like the final battle. If we do that in the second movie, then where do we go after that?"

At least we don't have too long to wait before we find out if he was just being really good at hiding the surprise.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is released in cinemas on December 21.
