13 years on from Orphan's release – and the first time we saw that near-incredible twist – a prequel is on its way to cinemas.

First announced back in 2020, Orphan: First Kill will re-visit Esther's age-defying story in another equally terrifying tale, and we're now just weeks away from its opening.

As Orphan: First Kill drops its first trailer, we get our first look at Isabelle Fuhrman in her iconic role as Esther once again, with the same make-up and camera trickery we saw in the original movie.

Because far from being a sweet and innocent young girl, Esther is actually a 33-year-old woman named Leena Klammer.

Orphan: First Kill's official synopsis acknowledges Esther's open secret, but warns "this time around there's more to this psychotic girl than meets the eye".

What to Read Next

"Escaping from the psychiatric facility that housed her, Esther hides in plain sight by assuming the identity of a missing American child whose mother is matriarch to one of the wealthiest families in the United States," it continues.

"Will Esther's thirst for blood destroy the strong family ties or will she discover that even a mother will cross the line to protect her family?"

Directed by The Boy's William Brent Bell and written by The Haunting in Connecticut's David Coggeshall, the prequel also stars Rossif Sutherland and Julia Stiles as Esther's 'mum'.

Aquaman and The Conjuring's David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Alex Mace take charge of the story, while eOne and Dark Castle Entertainment produce.

Orphan: First Kill opens in UK cinemas on Friday, August 19.
