Sonic the Hedgehog was a surprising success both critically and commercially – especially considering the track record of video game movies, and the backlash against the originally CGI version of the character.
The inevitable sequel is now one step closer, with the first trailer having just arrived as part of this year's The Game Awards – and it's a fitting spot to premiere the clip because it's full of Sonic game references.

This new footage brings Jim Carrey's Dr Robotnik back to earth in an egg-shaped spaceship (to finally embrace his true identity as Eggman?).
Robotnik has found the source of all power in the universe, and he's brought along Knuckles the Echidna (voiced here by Idris Elba for the first time) to steal Sonic's mojo.
Earlier this week, we got a poster featuring new character Miles 'Tails' Prower flying his signature plane, while Sonic rides on top of it, even though he's faster than the plane.
As mentioned, Tails isn't the only fan-favourite Sonic character making the jump to film – Knuckles joins the line-up too, teaming up with Dr Robotnik to search for a really important McGuffin, completely unaware that Robotnik is evil. Oops.
Tails will be voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey, who is the current video game voice of the character, and is also famous for voicing Sora in Digimon and Alicia in Valkyria Chronicles – possibly the most brilliantly over-powered game character of all time.
Sonic's movie voice actor Ben Schwartz was chuffed about the casting, tweeting: "THE LEGEND @VOColleen WILL BE VOICING TAILS IN #SonicMovie2!!! She is incredible in this movie! Can't wait for everyone to see! HOORRAYYY!!!!!!"
There was a bit of controversy this year when Sega announced the longtime Sonic game voice actor Roger Craig Smith would no longer voice the character, but he was thankfully reinstated.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is set for an April 8, 2022 release.
