The Oscar nominations are in, bringing some surprises (Viggo Mortensen for Best Actor!), some records (Meryl Streep gets her 20th nom!) and some, um, fairly predictable moves (La La Land is nominated for pretty much everything).

But there were some notable snubs this year too, here are the films and people that Oscar ignored this year.

1. Loving

A hotly-tipped true life story, sensitively directed and critically acclaimed, it was quite a shock how few nods Jeff Nichols's movie got. Joel Edgerton was overlooked for Best Actor (although Ruth Negga did at least get a Best Actress nod) and the movie was completely ignored in all other categories including Best Picture, even though there were only 9 out of a possible 10 films nominated.

2. The Birth of a Nation

This time last year, everyone was banging on about this movie which won the Grand Jury and audience awards at Sundance beating hot favourite Manchester by the Sea. But now the nominations are finally here and it's been completely overlooked. This might be due to some personal controversy surrounding the director, mind.

3. Amy Adams

She's a very well-liked and respected actress who's given two stand-out performances this year in Arrival and Nocturnal Animals, so it was quite a shock that she wasn't included in the Best Actress nods. Even more odd was the fact that the official website listed her in the nominations for about 10 minutes after they were announced and omitted Ruth Negga, in some sort of embarrassing blunder/terrible conspiracy. Maybe they were punishing her for Batman v Superman?

4. Silence

No love for Martin Scorsese this year then - Silence bagged only a Best Cinematography nom - no Best Pic, no Best Director and no acting noms. What the hell? It's a period drama starring Liam Neeson and it's about three hours long, what more does a director have to do?!

5. Captain America: Civil War and Deadpool

Traditionally superhero movies do get overlooked by the Academy, but we'd tentatively hoped that Cap or Deadpool might get some recognition, at least for some technical awards. After all, Mad Max: Fury Road got a Best Pic nom last year, Civil War is genuinely a great movie and everyone liked Deadpool. To add insult to injury, both Doctor Strange (visual FX) and Suicide Squad (hair and make-up) both DID get a nomination.

6. Finding Dory

To date it's the second highest grossing movie of 2016 (behind Captain America: Civil War), and Pixar usually rules the animation category at the Oscars. But not this year. Even though Finding Nemo was nominated for and won the Best Animation Oscar in 2004 (and was nommed for another 3 - screenplay, music and sound editing), Dory doesn't even get a nod.

7. Nocturnal Animals

Given Tom Ford's dark thriller bagged 9 BAFTA noms including Best Actor for Jake Gyllenhaal, Best Director, Best Film and Best Cinematography, we were shocked to see Nocturnal Animals largely ignored, other than a Best Supporting Actor nod for Michael Shannon. Even more reason for Amy Adams to be grumpy...
